Safe Treatment of Acne during Pregnancy

Formation of acne in the skin, particularly in the face, is one of the most common problems women encounter especially during the first trimester of conception. In fact, to some women, the question, ‘are these acne and could I be pregnant?’ could be logical especially when they are still unsure about their condition. Moreover, the first three months of pregnancy is the most delicate period because during the time, formation of the fetus in the womb starts a complicated process.

So how is treating acne when pregnant ensured? What is the safe and recommendable acne medication while pregnant? These questions are surely on the top of the minds of pregnant women who are feeling discomfort and insecurity especially when acne in the face starts erupting and multiplying.

First, there is a need to understand why acne occurs more often during pregnancy. The culprit is hormonal change, particularly, the increase of male hormone androgen in pregnant women’s bodies. Androgen make sebaceous glands secrete sebum, an oily substance that blocks skin pores and make for perfect breeding ground for skin bacteria. When bacteria inhabit the blocked skin pores, acne is formed, causing inflammation, which may lead to painful eruption eventually. Acne Scars may also be produced after eruptions.

Treatment must be prescribed by a dermatologist or a doctor to make sure formation of the fetus will not be affected. Most acne treatments in the market contain chemicals and substances that may be harmful to expecting moms and their unborn babies. Thus, natural remedies should be opted.

The skin should be washed regularly with mild soap and water. harsh soaps may contain ingredients that will make acne worse. After washing, the skin must be towel dried to make sure moisture is eliminated. Face scrubbers and creams, especially with tetracycline should be avoided. Makeup or cosmetics must be oil-free and water-based so that cleaning could be easier, which must be always done at least before going to bed.

It may also help if the pregnant woman will do regular physical exercise and consume Diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. Doing so would help improve blood circulation especially into the skin. Sweating is also a good form of cleansing and de-clogging skin pores.

As always, acne should not be touched by bare hands. First, hands could be contaminated with more bacteria that will make the situation worse. Second, frequent touching of acne will only cause further irritation, which could lead to premature eruption of acne. Psychologists also assert that pregnant women who touch acne more often are aggravating their feeling of insecurity and eventually, stress.

Moreover, acne tends to go away after the woman gives birth, when hormone levels and consistency normalizes. It should be noted that acne among pregnant women could be normal and usual. Acne can be somehow inevitable. Pregnant women can only take care of their skin really well and do natural remedies to cure and control their acne. There is no reason to panic about the situation. Hygiene, as always, could be a good skincare regimen especially during pregnancy.
