Keep reminded guys. Acne is not just caused by dirt. This misconception probably comes from the fact that blackheads look like dirt stuck in the openings of pores. The black color is not dirt but simply oxidised keratin. In fact, the blockages of keratin that cause acne occur deep within the narrow follicle channel, where it is impossible to wash them away. These plugs are formed by the failure of the cells lining the duct to separate and flow to the surface in the sebum created there by the body. Built-up oil of the skin can block the passages of these pores, so standard washing of the face could wash off old oil and help unblock the pores.

Actually, the red pimple looking things after shaving could be something a little worse than acne. It's possible to have folliculitis, which is a common infection in the hair follicles. Usually it is triggered by using old, dull shavers that deposit bacteria in the tiny open cuts after shaving. Keeping things sanitary will help minimize it, but if you notice it getting really bad go to the doctor because it can lead to a full out staph infection!!
Another possibility is razor burn, where you shave and a layer of cells grow over the pore of the hair follicle. Then, when the hair starts to grow back, it can't get out from underneath the layer of skin and begins to get infected. Exfoliating helps to minimize the collection of dead skin that can lead to razor burn. |

For the over 40 crowd, has anyone ever heard of not washing your face with a cleanser in the morning, given that you've washed it and moisturized the night before?

You should wash your face at night and then again in the morning and I would suggest a third time during the afternoon. Dirt and oil build up during the day from your hands and needs to be washed away. Using a soft washcloth works best.
